At Home at Sea
Situated in a picturesque coastal location, this project involved vision and an open mind, which was exactly what these clients had. The existing house and guest house suffered serious neglect from the previous owner, which required these clients to embark on an extensive renovation. The project included a complete interior overhaul as well as building envelope changes and engineering. The project would be a blank slate, but these clients were determined not to fall prey to a thematic coastal interior. Instead, they were interested in creating a unique, layered space that didn’t distract from the site, but stood out from the prevailing seaside look. Their finishes and furnishings needed to reflect their global travels and they wanted to surround themselves with things old and new, from near and far away. The interior also needed to compliment their growing collection of abstract paintings and black and white photography. In past homes, their aesthetic had been more traditional, but this project was an opportunity for them to explore modern design and employ new textures like oiled oak floors, a blackened steel fireplace surround, sleek limestone and marble surfaces, and layers upon layers of wood finishes. The result is a space that feels welcoming, warm and like home.
